If you want a good laugh as well as a wonderful story, this book is it. Gooney Bird Greene amuses her second-grade class and Mrs. Pigeon, her teacher, when she wears frilly underpants on her head to warm her brain. Mrs. Pigeon is the kind of teacher everyone should have, who accepts her for her idiosyncrasies and teaches them poetry. It ends with a memorable poem and is my recommended read-aloud for all families.
